Hi,I was selling a nokia N70 and within 15 minutes near the end of auction, my reserve was met and more. BUt the person who won has only opened an account today and it is registered in India. I said on my advert that I would not ship outside the UK. Got an email from the winning bidder saying they live in UK but are in India at the moment. The phone is for his son who is at a univeristy in Nigeria and they are willing to pay £30 extra to have the phone sent there. I got suspicious and told them I wouldn't send to Nigeria as there has been lots of problem but I got a nasty email telling me to "watch it or they'll report me as a scam" and I should apologize. They are insisting and I don't know what to do. I have reported them to ebay but what else can I do. They have not paid me and I don't want to sell the phone to them.
hiya i had the exact same last week, a woman claiming to be english but working in india bought my phone and sent an email to be saying that it was for her husband in nigeria. she wanted me to post it to him by royal mail. i agreed only when payment was made. 2 days later 2 e-mails from paypal saying that the money had been paid and i could now send the phone, only the e-mails were fake (quite good ones had it not been for the spelling mistakes!)decided if you cant beat em, join em and then sent back a few more emails with fake mail tracking numbers1 decided id had enough fun yesterday and sent a really bad e-mail back to the scammers!!!needless to say iv had no reply. dont worry about this, wait your 7 das and then report them as unpaid payers. what was the user number, mine was joycelen123, dont worry leeann
Hi, mine is called ahlysha10.She said she is in India recruting young players and won't be back in the uk for another 3 weeks.like I said the account was only opened today. The emails I have received are full of spelling mistakes and words you have never seen before. As soon as I saw the word Nigeria on her first email, alarm bells were ringing as I read a few threads about scams going on with Nigeria. I'll wait another few days and will report for non payment, then I can relist my items. thanks
Report to Ebay NOW for incorrect contact details. This will mean that Ebay make them a Non registered User. As Soon as both the Buyer become NARU you can claim from Ebay for your final value fees to be refunded -using the Non Paying Buyer reason. If you are relisting your item tick the 'will only post to the Uk' box and make the auction immediate payment with Paypal. Also block bidders who have 0 feedback with no credit card registered.
This Nigeria scam business is ringing alarm bells with me too! Just sold a camera within 8hours of it being posted on ebay. Buyer from Poland, asked for it to be shipped to her brother in Nigeria. Advised that shipping including insurance would be an extra £150 and she emailed back saying that this was acceptable and postal orders would be sent the same day. This was a bit odd as for the total cost she could have bought the goods new!. Then I received a very dodgy email from a company Bid Pay using the ebay logos who informed me that postal orders would be sent to me when they received the shipping details. emailed them back (and the buyer) to inform them that the goods were not being shipped until I received payment in full. Snotty email received from Bid Pay in the worst broken English I have seen. Still waiting for reply from seller. I am extreemly suspicious as they also suggested that if I gave my bank details the transaction would procede quicker. This did not happen as I was not born yesterday! Will readvertise if nothing received within 7 days. Watch this Space.
No need to wait.I already know the outcome. Four letters apply SCAM.
Report the Buyer to Ebay for incorrect contact details and when they are Made a Not a Registered User ,claim through Dispute Console for Non Paying Bidder to claim your fees back.
If you relist - make sure you blok bidders with 0 feedback and no credit card on file and make your auction immediate Payment with Paypal. I'd also make it Ship to UK Only and block bidders from outside the UK.
You're right - the email would be false as would be the Bidpay/Western Union/Paypl notification.
Also read this threat it explains all about Nigerian Scams.
Guess what!!! Ive been the victim of the Nigerian scam. My son sold his psp on ebay, withing 2 hours of advertising it we had someone who answered the "buy it now". The person was from sweden, wanted it for his in laws in Nigeria. Was told payment would be by Western Union. Then received email from western union asking for confirmation of postage. The buyer has emailed me twice asking y i have given him a negative rating.
Wow... I just got done by this too... very frustrating. This was my first time selling on ebay... I was selling a mobile phone. The bidding was going well, I was initially worried no one would buy from me as I have not yet built up a feedback score, and was won by karrencoles22. I got an email from the user straight away with a similar story about a reporter fiancee based in nigeria... i knew it was fake but had no idea what to do abut it so thanks for this!
At the insistance of my son it was posted to Nigeria. It was his item and altho i had my doubts and voiced them, he sent the item to Nigeria. Hence he is now well out of pocket and angry to say the least!!
Hi all, I too have been a target by the Nigerian and Dutch scammers! The 2 of them came in on the last 5 mins and outbidded genuine Ebayers!! Fortunately I did not send the goods and will have to relist, but what is in place to stop this happening again???????????? I have complained to Ebay and Paypal! SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE ABOUT THESE HEARTLESS FUC*ERS WHO ARE WRECKING EBAY..........
The same happened to me, but i sussed them an didnt send my item. After abit of digging i found approx 12 scammers in 30min all bidding for mobile phones i posted this on the discussion boards with the names and within 2hrs it had been deleted and got an email from ebay shame there not as quick at finding these scammers! And anyway why should'nt genuine ebayer know these scammers
A huge thanks to this forum. I have just had a buyer (craig_elliott22) who is from Netherlands area buy my phone at last moment.
He had 0 feedback and within 2 hours of the auction it flashed up that he was no longer an ebay member. He sent me the following email:
"I am very Happy to win the auction and it gives me great joy. I wanna pay for the item now by PAYPAL as this gives me great security. I am sending this item to my church minister in AFRICA/NIGERIA for a conference and i want it delivered fast and as such i am offering you 25GBP as the costs of postage using royal mail first class delivery.please reply now.thanks"
Got a paypal email claimimg that once shipment was sent and shipping number mailed to the buyer the funds will be released.
Thankfully spotted this forum in time so I did not post item and have since relisted it.
I had the exact same problem today. Was selling a nokia 6280, and within 1 day the but it now price had been met. Had seen a few pages whilst browsing ebay before that said clealry they would not send to nigeria, as a result, when i got a suspicious email from a 0 feedback user claiming to be in holland and wanting to send the phone as a present for her daughter in lagos, and when i read this forum, i refused to send the phone.
guess what? just been hit with the same scam! put my phone on for auction and just hours bfore end time the winning bid is for a vast ammount. although stating uk delivery only 'lillian james' requests i send it to nigeria for her son whos on vaccation out there?! thought it sounded dodgy and after looking on hear i see im not the only one!
right i fell for this selling an ipod video...have sent it already and not recieved payment - fell for that STUPID paypal tracking number thing! How Annonying Is That!??
Mobile Phone Scam - Ignore them and don't respond to any of their e-mails. I have just had exactly the same thing and they have now stopped bothering me. Please don't worry yourself, e-bay are also aware of this.
Hi, i have just sold a Nokia N70 on ebay. The seller reckons to live in Canada and wants it sent to NIGERIA to his fiance who lives there. Have got an email from them saying they will pay the postage via Royal Mail and have pasted the exact message i received below for you to read. Broken english, he doesn't know whether his girlfriend is a boy or a girl and it just doesn't add up. Especially now we have read the other emails. Came in to bid at the last minute and has only registered today! What a waste of time, effort and money! just glad i have not fallen for it!!!!!
Hello seller, Well am very happy to be the winner of your item, please i will like to ask you if your can ship this item to my fiancee in Nigeria, because my job wont allow me to send it to him myself,i am alway at work so please i really need you help.I am sending it to HER as a Birthday gift and i want it to be a surprise to her,so please i would really appreciate it if you can help me ship it over to him,i will pay all it cost to ship it there,so you just send me the total amount and i will pay via PAYPAL,i will appreciate it if you can help me send it through first class royal mail because it is faster, safter and reliable,i dont want anything to happen to the phone because it is an expensive phone and also i will like you to send it by Monday after you receive the payment, please get back to me ASAP........about the shipping cost VIA FIRST CLASS ROYALMAIL

Hi Well i've just logged on to this site in a bid to try and find help myself as i have just experienced exactly the same as you have. Mobile phone up for auction suddenly the price rocketed and i thought i had successfully sold to a buyer in Canada? However, just got home to find 'e'mails galore stating "i have paid" please send to 'Lagos Nigeria!' I have just forwarded the mail to spoof@paypal and await answer However, having now read the experiences of others and checked the buyers ( i use that term loosely) history i see that the details are shown as no longer registered with 'e' bay !! So i will give it a day or two and then re-list with a short sharp note on the bottom of the listing!! Hope everything works out for you. Cheers Chris
Hi Once more just to keep you posted the 'e' mail i sent to the spoof@paypal worked a treat they were exceptionally quick with a reply and confirmed what i had thought Yes you guessed it the 'e' mails were fake and even made to look as per paypal with logos etc the one thing that i did notice is that the text and logos were nowhere near as sharp as the genuine ones. So if ever in doubt it really is worth sending a copy to them just to put your mind at rest. Cheers Chris
I too was selling a mobile and within hrs today i got a buy it now bid.The user name of the scam buyer was "stephi00_j" and lo and behold she has just joined today with 0 feedback. They're out in force eh ? Thanks for info on how to reclaim my fees and on reporting them.
P.S if anyone is looking for a nice phone?lol!
Here is a copy of the mail i got today.

ZIP CODE.................... COUNTRY.................... BANK INFORMATION............................... PHONE ....CELL #,HOMES #,OFFICE #.................. Get back to me as soon as possible.
Bank information? God , those people don't think much of us do they? I suppose it only needs to work once to make them do it again, and again and again..........
I have also just fallen victim to a scammar from Canada who asked me to send my ring to Nigeria. It was the first item i sold over seas and when i got the emails from paypal saying she had paid and they needed the tracking number to release the funds i stupidly sent the item off and i still havn't got the £145 i sold it for. It has put me off selling on ebay to be honest because the emails i received had links on them that took me to paypal so i thoght they were real but i now know they were fakes. DONT SELL TO NIGERIANS
Same here. Sold my phone for a ridiculously high bid, get email from someone in Canada wanting me to send it to her fiance in Nigeria.
Was immediately suspicious about it.
Then received fake PayPal emails saying I'd get paid once I'd sent it.
Do they think we're born yesterday?
It's a shame ebay aren't as stringent with their registration process for buyers as they are for sellers... although I suppose a conman would get hold of credit card info if he was that crooked!
Be very very wary when you suddenly get stupidly high bids, when the emails aren't in decent English and when they have some wild story about you sending it to their vicar in Timbucktoo or whatever!!!
Hi - I have dealt with exactly the same thing! Firstly report it to ebay and DO NOT post the item out. When you get a reply from Ebay saying that this was a faudulent email you will be entitled to a refund. Apply for a refund and upon receiving your refund relist the item. In your ebay settings you will see that you can block people with people less than 5 feedbacks (or 1 or 2 or 3 etc) you can block anyone outside the UK or people with unpaid items
Look in your settings when you relist your items and on your ebay - protect yourself - i have and have had no problems since - apart from people emailing me spam via ebay but that is another story!
Dont communciate with this person anymore or else you could dig yourself a hole - await a reply from ebay- if you dont get one contact them again
This should see you through...good luck and stay strong - and go with your instincts - if a situation smells like sh*t then it probably is
Dear Christine, am buying the item for my boyfriend in NIGERIA as a birthday gift, am adding £30.00 for the shipping cost to him in NIGERIA because he his so dear to me,am making the payment by postal order, i will be very happy if u can do this for me,here is the shipping address below,

i sold a phone on buy it now and even though it stated united kingdom only someone bought it expecting me to send it to nigeria!! i immedietly knew something fishy was going on with him just becoming a member that day and having no feedback so refused and even got another email from them asking me again so they must be pretty desperate these con men!! this is the address he told me to ship too so be on your guard Amin Bamidele 21 ELizabeth street off ojuelegba Surulere Lagos 23401 NIgeria
I was really interested and glad to read your messages because I have a similar problem. I put a phone up for sale on Ebay and specified I would only post to the UK. The auction was then won by a woman who tells me that she wants to send the phone to her husband in Nigeria. She has said I can bill her for whatever extra costs I incur, however I am really supicious and in any case not only could I not guarantee delivery to Africa, but also the item is already packaged and postage paid for UK delivery.
Hi all well you realise you have been scammed and there is a phone/camera/ipod packed up and ready to go ( not to nigeria though) what do you do? You are all talking about re-listing, but you could check out your underbidders. The underbidder may be a legit uk reident tring to buy a phone and getting out-bid by Canadian/dutch/nigerian/indian newbies.
Check'em carefully and you could save a further wait.
I also had the same problem, last night. I was selling a Samsung D500. The bids were at £50, this idiotic person Tina Collins is her actual name then decided with mate to bid £222,£777,£999 and finally £1019 for the phone. Thankfully I was switch that night not believing any one would bid £900 over the actual bid for a second hand phone. Again it was to the same address as you have all mentioned above. I have reported the ebayer and sent the emails calling me mate (an insult in itself) to spoof@ebay.co.uk. I imagine it would be very difficult to stop someone that is reinventing themselves every time. I was lucky enough to have highest bidder with a genuine intention to buy purchase the phone. Always check you paypal account through a new browser, never rely on the email that has been sent to you stating payment has been made!!
A few days ago i posted my camera for sale on ebay...i was surprised today to receieve an email saying my item was sold for the amount i requested. Note that no other bids were made on this item, yet it was sold for the highest amount i requested..hmmm strange. I noticed the buyer was in Melbourne Asutralia, althuogh the suburb and postcode used were invalid. The buyer had also just registered with ebay on the same day of purchase. I then receive an email from the buyer saying:
" Hello friend how are you doing , my main reason of sending you this message is to let you that I'm ready to make payment for your item i bought from ebay auction site, am currently out of town at the moment ,am in Nigeria spending my holidays with my husband and i want to get this Item for my son as Birthday Gift ,so i want you to get the Shipping cost to Nigeria Via DHL or FEDEX ,immediately i comfirmed the total cost from you i will make payment with Bank transfer or Money order , So am expecting your reply with your full name and address of where the money order will be sent to or your bank detail so that i can transfer the money immediately ..
